Having trained as a Chartered Accountant in the City of London, Denis gained valuable experience within the finance departments of a number of large multi-national companies before establishing his own Surrey based accountancy practice in 1976.
As a Round Tabler, and subsequently a Rotarian, Denis has always believed that accountants should offer their skills to charitable organisations. Prior to becoming a Surrey County Councillor in 2009 Denis had served a 7 year term as Honorary Treasurer of The Ramblers Association. Previously he served for 7 years as a Trustee of the Camberley based Make-A-Wish Foundation UK. During his long term as President of Surrey Heath Chamber of Commerce he also served a period as their representative on the board of Surrey Chambers. He has recently completed his term as a Trustee of Camberley based Disability Initiative. Denis is a member of the 3 Counties Business Club and the Federation of Small Businesses.
In 2009 Denis was elected to serve on Surrey County Council as the councillor for Camberley West, which comprises the wards of Frimley, Watchetts and St. Michaels. He is the current Vice-chairman of the Education Select Committee and also serves on the Communities Select Committee and the Audit and Governance Committee. He has also served on the Health Scrutiny Committee and Planning and Regulatory Committee. In addition he represents Surrey County Council on the Blackwater Valley Countryside Partnership, Lifetrain Trust and Age Concern Surrey Heath. He served a 3 year term on the Board of Surrey Historic Buildings Trust.
He has always been a keen, if not particularly competent sportsman, and managed to play cricket, of a sort for fifty years; these days he is attempting to master his golf swing! Watching cricket is one of Denis’s favourite pastimes; he has followed Surrey County Cricket Club for more than fifty years and is a member of the MCC.
